Driving from Malaga to Marbella
#1 Stopover in the town of Mijas
Your first stop will be in the town of Mijas. It is a small town perched on a high mountain, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist trails and the hectic nightlife of the coast. There is a multi-storey car park under the terrace in the centre of the town. Parking costs €1 per hour.
Mijas is a typical 'White' village of Andalusia, the 'Pueblo Blanco', located on the Costa del Sol.
Getting to Mijas is easy: highway from Málaga, exit at Benalmádena Pueblo and then follow the signs up into the mountains.
#2 Stopover in the town of Coín
And so, moving on, up into the mountains again, through woods and fields, to the Andalusian town of Coin. Coin is a small quiet town, rich in history and referred to in history as the city of «300 gardens».
It was once home to the Romans. The old town of Coin is a maze of streets. It is a popular destination for Dutch visitors.
There are several churches in Quín: The church of San Andrés, known as the Caridad. The Church of San Juan is one of the largest churches in the province and has been officially declared a national monument of Spain.
There is also:
- Coin House
- Ceramic Factory
A film studio where the TV series «Eldorado» was filmed. The film studio is located on the outskirts of Coin and is also used as a hotel and restaurant.
Cheap 1 day car rental in Málaga for a scenic drive to Marbella
The road from Málaga to Marbella is very beautiful. Enjoying the natural scenery, you will quickly reach your road trip destination, the stunning city of Marbella.
Just 60 years ago Marbella was a humble village with a very quaint past. It was not until the 1970s — under the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco — that the city was persuaded to open its borders to foreign tourists. It was at this point that Spain embarked on a tourist boom!
All coastal villages and fishing villages were transformed into modern and well-appointed tourist centres of the Andalusian region. This has happened to the present resort of Marbella, with its narrow streets and delightful courtyards.
Marbella is a labyrinth of snow-white streets decorated with flowers
Marbella has grown very fast. The old Marbella has left only its historic centre which attracts many tourists who come here to explore the labyrinth of white-white streets, and to admire the houses, delightfully decorated by their tenants with a variety of floral decorations.
What to see in Marbella?
We love the old town of Marbella (Casco Antiguo). Much has been written about this city. So we will not repeat ourselves.
The city of Marbella is half surrounded by the ruins of the old Arab wall and therefore has some very interesting architecture. Wander along the beautiful narrow streets of the old town, checking out the courtyards full of geraniums and other extraordinary potted plants.
Don't miss the old churches, and of course the main church in the old town, the Iglesia Mayor.
